Guess who's back?

Image
It's me!  Yes I'm back blogging again.  Talk about a roller coaster ride I've been on the last few years.  My last post was 2 and half years ago.  I can't believe how much time has passed.  But I've had many changes in my life since then.  Biggest change is that after 30 years I have left the state of Florida. I moved to Florida from Connecticut when I was 12.  So basically I've called Florida home for most of my life. The thought of moving to another state terrified me. I loved living in Florida! Tropical weather all year long, easy access to the beach, hurricanes, alligators swimming in your nearest canal... ok maybe the last couple items weren't fun but you took the good with the bad. Husband's first office party!  Then my husband got a great opportunity at a company based out of Atlanta, Ga. I didn't want to move but this was a great opportunity for him and his career. The goal was for me to find a position here in higher education her...

A1A Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon Recap

Image
It has been years since I've blogged. I can't believe how long it's been but I FINALLY found something that I’m so excited to share with the masses!  This past Sunday I completed the Publix Fort Lauderdale A1A Half Marathon.  I completed this race last year and loved it so much I jumped online the next day and registered for 2016! Which meant I spent a whole year fretting about this race. When I first signed up there was a link in my registration that said "Transfer to another athlete". It was my first time seeing that for a race Expo and flat Mimi I signed up for. I took it as a bad omen.  LOL.  What if something happened and I couldn't run?? A million scenarios ran through my head.  But then October came and it was finally time to start training! I would go into the highs and lows of training season but there were so many ups and downs and twists and turns and I want to keep this post about that actual race! The day before the race (Saturday) aft...

Back in the saddle... not so fast

Image
So as I previously blogged about I've been trying to get back on my fitness game.  And let me tell you it's not as easy as I thought it would be.  Everyone keeps saying that I'll be back to my old self in no time but for me it's not happening fast enough.  And on top of that I've been having setbacks.    First thing I did was buy some new running shoes since my old ones had holes in them.  I went to the running store and learned that my regular shoe model was discontinued and Asics came out with a new model, the GT-2000.  Now the woman who fitted me at the running store gave me a 9.5 shoe.  I knew it was too big but she was the "expert" so I went with it. Well after running 2 days in them my foot, ankle and knee were killing me. So I took them back ( you get 2 weeks to return them).  Then I was given a half a size smaller. I thought that would do the trick, but nope ankle and knee still hurt when I ran. This was a blow to the system. So I t...

I'm back!

Image
So once again it's been a while since I've posted anything. And I have a good excuse!  There was really nothing fitness wise going on in my life especially the last trimester of my pregnancy.  I was eating everything in sight and even walking was becoming cumbersome.  But at the end of August I finally gave birth to a bouncing baby boy!  Hooray! He's perfect and beautiful and loud!  lol.... Dylan Maxwell But I still couldn't work out.  I started doing little walks here and there but I didn't want to do anything to ruin my recovery. I wanted to get the okay from my doctor at my 6 week check up.  Once that happened I started getting myself out there. My first day of "running" just consisted of racing my 4 year old up and down the street of our cul-de-sac.  But on Sunday I got with my running group and I did 3 miles!! My goal was to at least run the first mile (no matter how slow) without stopping, which I did, the other 2 miles consisted of ...

Running While Pregnant

Image
January 1st run! So now that I've come to terms with it, I'm proud to announce that I am pregnant!  LOL!  Just kidding. Well I am pregnant, but there was nothing to actually comes to terms too since I was trying to get pregnant. But it's one thing to think about getting pregnant and something else to actually be pregnant. Especially when it comes to health and fitness.  Everything kinds of takes a backseat to this new life growing inside you.  Which I became painfully aware of almost immediately after conception.  I noticed something was different about me and my running on January 1st.  I ran with some of my girls from Black Girls Run, and while doing a scant 3 miles I found myself huffing and puffing.  I thought it might have been from staying out late the night before ( don't worry no alcohol, I went to church as I always do for NYE.) So I just chucked it to having a bad day. Then a few days later I ran again and same thing happened. I w...

Racing past 2012

Image
I know I have been neglecting my blog and I know I promised to do better in 2012, but this time I mean it! So as far as running and fitness went, I did pretty well this past year.  One of my biggest goals was to do a 5K race every month in 2012.  I may not have done one every month but I more than made up for it by doing more than one race in other months. The first 5K race I did was in January 2012, the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure. My goal for this race was to take it easy since I was running a Half marathon the next day.  But of course once I got out there my competitive spirit took control and I ended up running a personal best in that race.  I went from a 34:33 from my first race to a 31:43.  Shave almost 3 minutes off my first 5K time. I was ecstatic.  After that I sent a goal to run a 5K race every month in 2012.  For the most part I did it. There were some months where I didn't run a 5K but made it up in the following month when ...
